Here's our URL: http://www.calpoly.edu/~dmalone/w6bhz/ What Happened Over the Summer The Highway 41 Fire: The Cal Poly Amateur Radio Club sprung into action, with members staffing various ARES/RACES posts and providing emergency communications for the disaster. The W6BHZ repeater was used for MedCom traffic in the San Luis Obispo area. Amateur radio operators were staffing each hospital, riding along in the ambulances, and passing messages from the county EOC to dispatch. Participants included N6TQL, KC6WOT, KC6WOW, KC6WRF, KD6HPC, KD6HPD, KD6JTS, AH6MM and KO6GA. Other ARES/RACES events: KD6RCT, KC6WOT and KO6GA participated in the first ever City of San Luis Obispo disaster drill that included ARES/RACES. The City has traditionally shunned amateur radio, but thanks to encouragement from fellow ham and Cal Poly alumni Steve Smith (KC6WRD), a battalion chief with the city fire department, amateur radio rose to the occasion in a simulated hazardous materials incident. Amateur radio proved effective, and we look forward to working with the City of SLO again soon. Shack cleanup: We started just putting things away after Field Day and ended up with a much larger project. The furniture was moved, the file cabinet was organized, and every odd piece of kludge material was sorted. Permanent power strips were built in to the station tables by Ryan, KD6HPD. A power supply was added to the work bench for equipment servicing, and ethernet/power was rerouted for our new Sun workstation. Repeater: The UHF repeater has died again, and it is looking bad. We'll see what happens. In addition, new ROM's have been installed in the controller and it has been reprogrammed, with many new and exciting messages. Stay tuned! Other repeater projects: Club members have been very busy this summer working on expansion projects for W6BHZ. We have gained access to a site at Tassajara Peak, which will finally afford us the opportunity for a high-level repeater in San Luis Obispo County. Many exciting opportunities for VHF/UHF repeater operations are up and coming! Coke machine: Special thanks to KD6HPC and all of those who helped keep the machine stocked all summer long.
